Dear Reader your assistance is Required

I have a plethora of shields to paint, the dilemma is this:
I have a few choices, here are the close ups:
In my heart of hearts I know I've used too many colours in my army; to reunite the army should I use the modified shields I made shown at the top of the photo? Or should I continue to differentiate my shock elites by using the old heroquest shields pictured centre and the old clanrat shields at bottom?
I plan to use the rat shields at the top for clan moulder's pack masters and the dagger hands for my gutter runners. The five tri formed shields I can do without unless someone has a suggestion.
The four at bottom are by far the most detailed, but that means more time. I was thinking of putting them on the stormvermin. I've always pictured them as the secret police of the clan and thusly  would show their horned rat allegiance with relish.
Anyway I've been thinking about this for a couple of hours and running up the wall second guessing myself.
Please comment below and give me some advice!

  1. I think your idea to differentiate the stormvermin is good, for the rest, just use a very limited palette on all shields, you can always add variety by doing halves in different colours or checkers and other motives as long as you keep a restricted palette ( like 2 + 1 for the back).

    1. Thanks for the sound advice, Ive always been chicken to paint checker patterns but this is as good an excuse as any to bite the bullet and give it a go.

  2. I agree with Asslessman. They key with the shields isn't really the molded design, as it is the colour. I think you can maintain continuity by perhaps using the same background colour to all the shields -- and then differentiating between your units by using a different inner design (rats, daggers, three slashes etc) that is painted in a different palate.

    2. I know - we've got to get a game together: I appreciate your patience. My Saturdays have still be crunked up with rennovations. But they are slowly coming to a close. Can't wait to see your forces in all their glory.

    1. Thanks for commenting, these two are solid painters so I trust their judgement. We'll see if my work holds up to their standards, (probably not).

    1. I've come to realize it will best if my warrior units all have the same style shield, my stormvermin however I'm forcing myself to freehand... that'll be fun.
      NOT!
