May cause drowsiness

Hey chums, 
At work the other day (prison service) I royally screwed up my back; slipped disc, sciatic nerve pressure and 3 pulled muscles have left me incapacitated for the most part. 
It's quite impossible to hunker down at the paint table longer than 5 minutes which has completely f*cked me over on my 1 a day challenge. 
If I feel up to it (that is to say if I ever surface from my dr prescribed OXY coma) I plan on getting my skaven based up. I'm going to try Mr Blue in VT's excellent method and cheers to him for putting a SOLID tutorial up for everyone to learn from, good on you Sir. 
Next on the agenda would be some movement trays, preferrably some magnetized ones. If anyone can share a link to a walkthrough I would appreciate it, I'd especially like to know what the acceptable border edge width is. 
I think I can tackle these projects as they both require about 1 minute of work per step with copious amounts of time in between for everything to set. 
Because I'm unable to paint, I've spent a boatload of time on my 3rd edition Skaven 3k army list. Anyone who can give an experienced opinion on wizards of any level in 3rd edition would be great. 
Well I guess I've asked quite enough of my faithful readers. All 11 of you. lol. The  oxy is definitely working, I'm off to bed!!

    Wizardswise I suggest one high level to be your general and then a smattering of low levels dotted around the units that don't have Relic Banners to boost Cool. Spells ai tend to go for are either Undead or lesser Daemon summoning ones. Take a Talismanic Standard as the second ability for your Army Standard (Relic being the other ability) and stick all of your general's magic points in it. That way he has a pool of 40 or 50 magic points (remember, Skaven Wizards can't rest to regain magic points) so he can hopefully use the pre-battle spell cast to summon up your (preferably) lesser daemons or undead allies. Why do you summon up pre-battle? You're a Skaven like me and that means you need cunning and pre-battle spells automatically work and summoning daemons in game is a difficult job! If you keep the units with the other wizards in close to your Army Standard Bearer too then they can, with proper placement) benefit from it's abilities too.

    1. Cool thanks for the reply. I'm on the same page with the talismanic standard, even if it is a bit cheese kill. Maybe I'll only take it against grudge kill opponents :)

  2. Good luck with the recovery!

    Magic really does overwhelm Warhammer if you get the balance wrong, it can seem as though the army is less important than your conjuring at times. Try starting low, a couple of level 15 per side, and see what you think of the results. Having a nasty high level wizard as the enemy in a scenario can be fun though!

    1. I hear what you're saying. I'm not out to crush all comers either; I would rather have a fun game than a win at all costs scenario. Maybe that is what pushed me back to 3rd in the first place. A pair if 15's may be in order, I vehemently cling to the random spell generation rules and rolled precisely shit for 3rd and 4th level. Maybe just stick to 1st and 2nd

  3. The most important aspect of Skaven Wizards isn't the spells, it's the cool bonus. If you play without these bonuses then a Skaven army will soon run off.

    1. Oh yeah, I forgot about the rats being cheese-eating surrender monkeys without a smattering of characters. At least having several low level is still better than a couple of high level though. Magic is a big part of Warhammer obviously but it canbecome a bit too dominant, always worth checking with your opponent what they prefer.

  4. Man I'm sorry to hear about your back! Back pain is the worst...Also I feel you on the Oxy haze....that was the whole month of June for me with my broken ankle. hang in there and transition off that shit as fast as you can.

    I'm glad that you found my basing tutorial useful....let me know if you have any questions. You are right in thinking that its got a lot of short steps with some waiting in between. the part that takes the longest is getting the White Glue spread around for the sand...you have to be careful not to get it on anyone's toes! If you you do that stage a figure at a time you might be alright.

    While I'm no skaven expert my general rule of thumb for 3rd edition is to have one high level wizard (at least 15th level) and maybe a second lower level...level 5 and 10 wizard tend to be mostly worthless in my experience.

    Of course I'm also perfectly happy to play games with no magic phase.

  5. Hope the back sorts itself out soon. Nasty!

    I've just painted up a lvl 15 wizard for my Bretonnians. It felt the right level to go for - fantasy magic fun, without being world-domineering superweapon. I have no skaven experience (outside bloodbowl!) to suggest anything else :)

  7. Hope you're getting better after breaking yourself. I just broke myself pretty severely on Friday and have been rendered more or less useless.

    A friend of mine who had a 3rd edition Skaven army years ago based it around a council of 4 or 5 wizards of various levels, mostly 10th or 15th. These Wizards were the backbone of the army, and all the units represented their personal household troops, each Wizard having his own contingent painted and themed in a style similar to his own. It was a fun army and quite tough.

      Your friend's army sounds like a lot of fun and exemplifies what 3rd is all about; flavourful armies full of background with striking paint jobs that could just turn out being competitive.
      I plan for my clan to be comprised of 3 principal mischiefs (groups) of rats all jockeying for control, basically wizard led Clanrats and black skaven trying to keep their grip on the leadership against an up and comer animal handler movement with an out of luck mischief comprised of the army's slaves.
